What We Believe

Guided by grace, living in faith, and serving with love

Our Mission

Our mission at Mendham United Methodist Church is to grow in faith, serve with love, and share the hope of Christ with all. Through worship, community, and outreach, we strive to be a welcoming church where everyone can experience God’s grace and live out His call to love and serve others.

Faith and Belief

Faith and belief in the United Methodist Church are grounded in the teachings of Scripture and the life of Jesus Christ. We believe that faith is a journey, beginning with God’s grace, which invites everyone into a personal and communal relationship with God. Central to our belief is that God is loving and merciful, and through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we are offered the promise of salvation and new life.

For United Methodists, faith is more than belief—it is something we live out through our actions. We are called to respond to God’s grace by pursuing justice, showing compassion, and striving for peace. Our faith grows as we engage with Scripture, participate in the sacraments, and serve our community. Together, we seek to be transformed by God’s love and to share that love with the world.

Our Beliefs

Faith in the Holy Trinity

There is but one living and true God, everlasting, without body or parts, of infinite power, wisdom, and goodness; the maker and preserver of all things.

In unity of this Godhead there are three persons, of one substance, power, and eternity—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.

The Word

The Son, who is the Word of the Father, the very and eternal God, of one substance with the Father, took man’s nature in the womb of the blessed Virgin.

Two whole and perfect natures, that is to say, the Godhead and Manhood, were joined together in one person, never to be divided; whereof is one Christ, very God and very Man, who truly suffered, was crucified, dead, and buried, to reconcile his Father to us, and to be a sacrifice, not only for original guilt, but also for actual sins of men.

The Resurrection

Christ did truly rise again from the dead, and took again his body, with all things appertaining to the perfection of man’s nature, and ascended into heaven.

The Holy Ghost

The Holy Ghost, proceeding from the Father and the Son, is of one substance, majesty, and glory with the Father and the Son, very and eternal God.

Original Sin

The corruption of the nature of every man, whereby man is very far gone from original righteousness, and of his own nature inclined to evil.

Good Works

Although the fruits of faith,  cannot put away our sins, and endure the severity of God’s judgment, they pleasing and acceptable to God.

By them a lively faith may be as evidently known as a tree is discerned by its fruit.
